The best winter golfing destination
Football may be the world’s biggest spectator sport and swimming the most practised, but no leisure activity can claim to have had the impact on landscape – or, indeed, the property market – that golf has had in recent decades. Although, with a myriad other attractions, Cyprus doesn’t rely on its seas of greens quite as heavily as Spain, Portugal or Florida, yet there is still plenty to interest and challenge those who wish to spoil a good walk! However the government is committed to attracting 5% of the European winter golf market, with various drives to increase the facilities.
Vikla Golf Course
Vikla Golf Course near Limassol is typical of the Cypriot approach to attractions and tourism. The 18-hole par-68 short 4081m course requires no handicap certificate or even formal dress, giving it a great family atmosphere. The Clubhouse offers simple food and drink and there’s also a swimming pool on the terrace.
Tsada Golf course
Golfers looking for a more traditional and harsher test must make for the region surrounding Paphos where the islands three Championship standard courses lie. The Donald Street-designed Tsada Golf Course was opened in 1994, making it the island’s oldest. Formal dress is a must; however you can play at non-peak times without a handicap. The course is a lovely golfing challenge although taking in two loops of 9 holes, the lowest handicappers may need something a little bit more trying.

Secret Valley Golf Course
For an even tougher challenge, 20 minutes or so east of Paphos is the Secret Valley Golf Course where only handicappers of 28 (men) or 36 (ladies) or less can play. Right on the coast of the stunning Petra tou Romiou area, the course is as tough as it is beautiful and has all the best facilities, from putting greens and a driving range to a PGA instructor and cutting-edge video coaching.
Further courses in the making
There are many new courses in the planning stages, with a championship golf course currently being constructed in the Larnaca region, providing a further professional golf course further boosting the reputation of Cyprus as a top golfing destination.
Cabell Robinson´s Aphrodite Hills
The jewel in the crown of Cypriot golf is undoubtedly Cabell Robinson’s Aphrodite Hills, which was built in 2002. The 18-hole, 6665m, par-71 course follows the scenic contours of the two plateaux that are divided by a central ravine and is the most prestigious in Cyprus, with views over the cobalt Mediterranean, and all the facilities you’d expect, such as driving range and pro-shop..
The course is part of the Aphrodite Hills complex which includes a luxurious five-star hotel and golfing properties. Prices of these frontline golf apartments start at around CY£220,000, going up to over CY£500,000 for magnificent villas that sit right next to the greens.
