Cypriot People

Famous for being welcoming and extremely hospitable, Cyprus’ people are a reflection of the stunning and dramatic landscape and the equally impressive history.
Some islanders are notably poorer than western Europeans and many still live rural, agricultural lifestyles, however Cyprus is modernising rapidly and the Cypriots embrace foreigners. The standard of living is, therefore, exceptional and, if you spend any significant amount of time there, you can expect to count local Cypriots amongst your closest friends very quickly.
Greek is the official language but the large majority of Cypriots speak excellent English.

The crime rate to is around one sixth of the European average, making it an extremely safe place for individuals and families.


Banks

The usual international banks have a presence in Cyprus, as well as the well-established Cypriot branches such as Alpha Bank, Hellenic Bank and The Bank of Cyprus. All of these follow the British system, so should be easily for most to manage and feel comfortable. They can cater for everyone private individuals to heavy-hitting businessmen and are, by and large, extremely helpful. A word of warning though: branches only open between 8.15 and 12.30 Monday to Friday.

The currency used is the Cypriot Pound (CY£) which is made up of 100 cents. At current rates, the CY£ is roughly equivalent to 1.16 Pound Sterling.


Healthcare

No vaccinations are required in order to visit Cyprus and no major considerations are necessary other than common sense. It’s probably best to drink bottled water and plenty of it, as temperatures rise high especially during summer months. Equally, even if you’ve made the move on a permanent basis, remember sun protection on a daily basis.


The highest standards of care

Many Cypriot doctors in fact qualified in the UK or USA and, with brand new, modern general hospitals open in Larnaca and Paphos, the healthcare system is excellent. As well as public health, a private health sector does exist.
