Information about Cyprus and Cypriots

Cyprus – Back to Basics

There’s a whole range of information and factors to take into account when deciding to invest in or move to Cyprus, so here’s a rundown of the main points about Cypriot living.

Government

Upon gaining independence from Britain in 1960, Cyprus became a constitutional republic, with the UK maintaining a few Sovereign bases. The island is a full member of the European Union, The Council of Europe, the Commonwealth and the United Nations.

The Head of State, the President, is democratically elected by voters over the age of 18 and terms last five years. The House of Representatives – 56 elected members – is responsible for law-making.

The ‘Cyprus Problem’

36% of the island (the northern part) is Turkish, following the Turkish army invading the island and capturing this portion in 1974. The two parts are separated by a UN-patrolled ‘Green Line’ and access between them is restricted. However, there are on-going negotiations to resolve this problem, possibly by adding Northern Cyprus to the EU.

Getting There

Both Paphos and Larnaca have international airports, with regular flights from most large European cities. The low-cost carrier Monarch has recently announced a new flight between London Luton and Larnaca and it is widely believed that the other budget carriers will follow suit, dramatically lowering the average cost of travelling to Cyprus.
