Shopping in Cyprus - Lefkara silk and Commandaria

Shopping

Culture, history, nature, climate and attractions are all very well but there’s one activity that always has been and always will be an essential for ladies, as well as a stalwart of the holidaying experience: shopping. To get a real feel for Cypriot life and the chance to find some of the best bargains, a trip to the local markets is an absolute must.

Head to the gift shops

The usual tourist traps and several of the big international chains can be found on the island; however the real joy (and bargains) begins when you go in search of local products and specialities. The Cyprus Handicraft Service is a government-run enterprise which promotes the goods of local artisans, so look for shops displaying this name if you want truly original hand-made gifts.

Centuries of tradition

For over 400 years, the town of Lefkara has been producing the highest quality of silk; pick up shawls, tablecloths or clothing here quite unlike anything you’ll find anywhere else in the world. The town also has a strong tradition for working with silver, so perhaps a wonderful piece of jewellery will take your fancy.

What to look out for in the markets

Elsewhere, look for jackets, handbags, wallets, belts and shoes, as Cyprus leather is extremely good value and many tourists choose to take a bottle or two of the local plonk home. Cypriot wine has delighted Roman, Greek and Egyptian palettes over the centuries and there are some excellent reds, whites and sherries available today.
